Weinpavillon Südmole Mainz
Ausgangslage
Am nördlichen Ende der Südmole des ehemaligen Mainzer Zollhafens entsteht ein neues Stadtquartier mit Wohnen, Arbeiten und Freizeit auf rund 22 ha. Hier soll ein Weinpavillon mit regionalen Weinen und Spezialitäten als neue Landmarke und Treffpunkt errichtet werden.
Konzept
Der Entwurf interpretiert die historische Hafenumgebung und die Bildsprache von parallel zum Rhein gestapelten Schiffscontainern. Der Pavillon an der Spitze der Südmole wirkt wie frisch abgeladene Container, vermittelt Bezug zu Hafen, Warenumschlag und urbaner Dynamik und wird bewusst als logische Landmark wahrgenommen.
Architektur Beschreibung
Die Doppelreihe von Containermodulen kombiniert geschlossene Servicecontainer mit offenen, verglasten Gastcontainern und Pergolen. PVC-Planen bieten Sonnenschutz, während die Glasflächen des Gastraums vollständig geöffnet werden können. Die Kubatur erzeugt attraktive Außenbezüge für Terrassenbereiche, gleichzeitig werden Rückseiten abgeschirmt. Die „Laterne“ des Gastraums erinnert in den Abendstunden an einen Leuchtturm und schafft einen hellen, offenen Raum.
Konstruktion
Die Containerrahmen bestehen aus wetterfestem Corten-Stahl, Flachdächer sind mit Kunststoffbahnen abgedeckt und mit Gitterrost begehbar. Bodenflächen innen und außen sind in splintfreiem Hartholz (Robinie, Bangkirai) ausgeführt, Servicebereiche gefliest. Der Pavillon ruht auf einem Ponton, wodurch Hochwasserschutz und barrierefreier Zugang gewährleistet werden. Beleuchtung erfolgt über punktuelle Strahler an den Containerkanten und Streckmetallflächen zur Akzentuierung.
Initial Situation
At the northern tip of the Südmole in the former Mainz Customs Harbor, a new urban quarter with residential, commercial, and leisure functions is being developed on approximately 22 ha. A wine pavilion offering regional wines and specialties is planned as a new landmark and social hub.
Concept
The design references the harbor history and the visual language of container stacks along the Rhine. Positioned at the tip of the Südmole, the pavilion evokes freshly unloaded containers, associating with the harbor, goods handling, and urban activity, and is intentionally perceived as a logical landmark.
Architectural Description
The pavilion consists of double rows of container modules, combining closed service containers with open, glazed guest containers and terrace pergolas. PVC tarpaulins provide sun protection, while the glass panels of the guest area can be fully opened. The strict cubic layout creates attractive outdoor spaces and screens back areas. The “lantern” of the guest space resembles a lighthouse at night, creating a bright and open interior.
Construction
Container frames are made of weather-resistant Corten steel; flat roofs are covered with PVC membranes and accessible via grating. Interior and exterior floors are splinter-free hardwood (Robinia, Bangkirai), service areas are tiled. The pavilion rests on a pontoon, ensuring flood protection and barrier-free access. Spotlights along container edges and expanded metal surfaces accentuate the space.
