Ausgangslage
Bahnhofstraße und Münsterplatz bilden den Auftakt einer zentralen Platzfolge in Mainz. Das Bearbeitungsgebiet ist stark durch Verkehr und Infrastrukturelemente geprägt. Unterschiedliche Beläge und Ausstattungslinien erschweren die räumliche Orientierung. Der Entwurf zielt darauf ab, die städtische Raumfolge klar erlebbar zu machen und den Platz für Fußgänger zu öffnen.
Konzept
Die Wartehallen, der Boulevard und die große Überdachung am Münsterplatz werden als prägnante, aber zurückhaltende Infrastrukturelemente gestaltet. Die Platzbereiche werden funktional und städtebaulich differenziert: Wartehallen mit klarer Formensprache an Bahnhof- und Binger Straße, die Münsterplatz-Überdachung als neuer Treffpunkt mit hohem Wiedererkennungswert. Der Entwurf schafft durch wenige, sorgfältig gesetzte Elemente ein kohärentes räumliches Gesamtkonzept.
Architektur Beschreibung
Die Wartehallen sind als robuste L-Figuren mit Rahmenwirkung konzipiert, integriert in ein 50 cm breites Bodenband mit Sitzflächen, Automaten und Baumstandorten. Die große Überdachung am Münsterplatz besteht aus neun Edelstahl-Pyramiden auf Rundstützen, deren Spiegelung und Formensprache städtebauliche Präsenz zeigen. Der Kiosk als dienendes Element ergänzt die Aufenthaltsbereiche. Baumgruppen, Beläge und Möblierung schaffen eine hohe Aufenthaltsqualität und stärken die Stadtraumwahrnehmung.
Konstruktion
Alle Oberflächen sind robust und barrierefrei: Betonsteinpflaster in H-Verband mit Konfetti-Einwürfen, langlebige Eichenholz-Sitzflächen, Stahlblech DB703 und VSG-Verglasung. Die Dächer der Wartehallen und Münsterplatz-Überdachung bestehen aus Edelstahl-Pyramiden mit Gitterrostabdeckung; LED-Beleuchtung und Lautsprecher sind vandalismussicher integriert. Die Konstruktion ermöglicht einfache Wartung und langfristige Nutzung.
Initial Situation
Bahnhofstraße and Münsterplatz form the beginning of a central sequence of squares in Mainz. This area is heavily influenced by traffic and existing infrastructure, with varying pavement types and street furniture complicating spatial clarity. The design aims to strengthen the perception of the urban sequence and open the space for pedestrians, creating a coherent and accessible public realm.
Concept
The waiting shelters, boulevard, and large canopy at Münsterplatz are conceived as distinctive yet restrained infrastructure elements. The square areas are functionally and spatially differentiated: waiting shelters with clear form language along Bahnhofstraße and Binger Straße, and the Münsterplatz canopy as a new urban meeting point with strong recognition value. A minimal set of carefully positioned elements creates a unified and legible spatial concept.
Architectural Description
The waiting shelters are structured as robust L-shaped forms with a “frame” effect, aligned along a 50 cm wide pavement strip integrating seating, ticket machines, and tree locations. The large Münsterplatz canopy is composed of nine stainless steel pyramids on round supports, whose reflective surfaces and sculptural shapes provide a strong urban presence. A kiosk serves as a functional complement to the public space. Carefully arranged trees, pavements, and street furniture create high-quality pedestrian zones and enhance the experience of the cityscape.
Construction
All surfaces are durable and barrier-free: H-pattern concrete pavers with integrated “confetti” detailing, oak wood seating, DB703-coated steel panels, and laminated safety glass (VSG). The roofs of the waiting shelters and the Münsterplatz canopy are made of stainless steel pyramids with open grid covers; integrated LED lighting and speakers are vandalism-resistant. The construction ensures ease of maintenance, long-term durability, and sustainable use.
