Ausgangslage
Das Vapiano Restaurant im Malakoff-Park (MAP) in Mainz wurde als erster großer Baustein des Redevelopments realisiert. Dem Gesamtprojekt ging ein von einer Kapitalanlagegesellschaft ausgelobter Architektenwettbewerb voraus, den SCHOYERER ARCHITEKTEN_SYRA 2009 gewannen. Ziel war die städtebauliche und gestalterische Neuordnung des Gewerbeparks mit Fassadenumbauten, der Neugestaltung der Passage sowie markanter Bauteile wie dem Hauptzugang an der Rheinstraße und dem Portalgebäude an der Ecke Rheinstraße/Dagobertstraße.
Konzept
Eine zentrale Wettbewerbsaussage war die Vereinheitlichung der Außendarstellung des Malakoff-Park Mainz. Hierfür wurde im Bereich der Erdgeschossdecke ein durchlaufendes anthrazitfarbenes Band eingeführt, das sämtliche Werbeanlagen und Firmenlabels aufnimmt. Dieses Logoband fungiert zugleich als architektonisches Bindeglied: Es bildet die Attika des Restaurantanbaus sowie der Pergola für die Außenbewirtschaftung. Durch dieses verbindende Element wird der Restaurantanbau von Vapiano organisch in die Struktur des fünfgeschossigen Gebäudekomplexes eingebunden. Ohne das Band erschiene der Baukörper als solitärer eingeschossiger Anbau auf der Rheinuferterrasse; durch die präzise Setzung entsteht hingegen ein ensemblebildender Zusammenhang.
Architektur Beschreibung
Das Vapiano Mainz im MAP umfasst rund 800 m² und gliedert sich in Funktionsbereiche mit Lager-, Küchen-, Verwaltungsräumen und Sanitäranlagen sowie in unterschiedliche Gastraumbereiche mit Selbstbedienungstheken (Live-Cooking) und Getränkebar. Im Innenraum stehen 200 Sitzplätze zur Verfügung, ergänzt durch weitere 200 Plätze im Außenbereich, davon 100 in einem beheizbaren und ganzjährig nutzbaren Wintergarten. Bei guter Witterung kann die gesamte Fassade gefaltet und seitlich geöffnet werden. Es entsteht ein fließender Übergang vom geschlossenen Innenraum über den verglasten Restaurantbereich zum Wintergartenpavillon und weiter in den Pergolabereich auf der Rheinuferterrasse. Die Gastraummöblierung wurde von Matteo Thun, Mailand, entworfen. Die begrünte Dachfläche ist von umliegenden Gebäudeteilen einsehbar und wird so Teil des stadträumlichen Erscheinungsbildes.
Konstruktion
Der Umbau und die Erweiterung im Bestand integrieren den Restaurantanbau konstruktiv in die vorhandene Gebäudestruktur des Malakoff-Park. Das durchlaufende Fassadenband übernimmt neben seiner gestalterischen Funktion die Aufnahme von Werbeanlagen und bildet eine klare horizontale Ordnung. Die Pergolakonstruktion sowie der verglaste Wintergarten ermöglichen eine flexible, saisonunabhängige Nutzung der Gastronomieflächen und stärken die Belebung der Rheinuferterrasse in Mainz.
Existing Conditions
The Vapiano restaurant at Malakoff Park (MAP) in Mainz was realized as the first major component of the site’s redevelopment. The overall project followed an architectural competition commissioned by an investment company, which SCHOYERER ARCHITEKTEN_SYRA won in 2009. The competition aimed at an urban and aesthetic reorganization of the commercial park, including façade renovations, the redesign of the central passage, and the creation of prominent architectural elements such as the main entrance on Rheinstraße and the corner portal building at Rheinstraße/Dagobertstraße.
Concept
A central design principle of the competition was the unification of Malakoff Park’s external appearance. To achieve this, a continuous anthracite-colored band was introduced at the level of the ground floor ceiling, accommodating all signage and corporate logos. This logo band simultaneously serves as an architectural link, forming the parapet of the Vapiano restaurant extension as well as the pergola for outdoor dining. By integrating this continuous element, the Vapiano extension is seamlessly woven into the structure of the five-story building complex. Without the band, the single-story extension would appear as a solitary addition on the Rhine terrace; the precise placement of the band, however, establishes a cohesive ensemble.
Architectural Design
The Vapiano Mainz at MAP covers approximately 800 m² and is organized into functional zones including storage, kitchen, administrative offices, and sanitary facilities, alongside distinct dining areas with self-service counters (live cooking) and a beverage bar. The interior accommodates 200 seats, complemented by an additional 200 seats outdoors, of which 100 are located in a heated, year-round winter garden. In favorable weather, the entire façade can be folded and opened laterally, creating a seamless transition from the enclosed interior through the glazed restaurant area to the winter garden pavilion and further into the pergola on the Rhine terrace. All furnishings were designed by Matteo Thun, Milan. The landscaped roof is visible from surrounding buildings, integrating it into the cityscape.
Construction
The renovation and extension integrate the restaurant structurally into the existing building of Malakoff Park. The continuous façade band not only performs an aesthetic role but also accommodates signage and establishes a clear horizontal order. The pergola structure and glazed winter garden enable flexible, year-round use of the dining areas, enhancing the vibrancy of the Rhine terrace in Mainz.
